6 dages Kilimanjaro Trekking Marangu-rute

Beskrivelse

Turoversigt

Known affectionately as the “Coca-Cola Route,” the Marangu rute is the oldest, most established path on Mount Kilimanjaro. It’s the only route that offers dormitory-style sleeping huts instead of camping, making it a popular choice for climbers who prefer solid walls and a bed at night.

The route approaches the mountain from the southeast and follows a direct, gradual path all the way to the summit. Many people choose Marangu because it feels like the easiest and most straightforward way up Kilimanjaro, the trail has a gentle slope, and you sleep in huts with communal dining areas and basic facilities each night.

However, because the 6-day version is relatively short, acclimatization can be more challenging than on longer routes. The ascent and descent follow the same trail, so the scenery is less varied than the Machame or Northern Circuit routes, and it tends to be the most crowded path on the mountain.

This 6-day Marangu itinerary includes an extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, which significantly improves your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak. It’s ideal for reasonably fit climbers who want a classic Kilimanjaro experience with the comfort of huts rather than tents.

As an Arusha-based local operator, Kiwoito Africa Safaris has guided many successful climbs on the Marangu Route. Our experienced Tanzanian guides know the trail intimately, understand how to pace the days for better acclimatization, and provide warm, personal support throughout. We supply quality sleeping bags, mattresses, pillows, and fresh meals prepared daily by our mountain crew.

The best time to climb is during the drier seasons (January–March and June–October). If you’re looking for a historic, hut-based trek with a direct path to the roof of Africa, the 6-day Marangu rute er et vidunderligt valg.

Dag for dag opdeling

Dag 1: Marangu Gate til Mandara Hut

Your adventure starts with a scenic drive from Moshi or Arusha to Marangu Gate. After completing the necessary park formalities, you begin trekking through beautiful tropical rainforests. The trail is wide and well-maintained, winding upward through tall trees draped in moss. Keep an eye out for blue monkeys playing in the canopy.

As you reach the upper edge of the forest, the path opens onto rolling hillsides. After 4–5 hours of steady walking, you arrive at Mandara Hut (8,858 ft). Enjoy your first night in the cozy dormitory-style hut and a hot meal in the communal dining hall.

Dag 2: Mandara Hut til Horombo Hut

You continue climbing through the last section of forest before the landscape opens into high moorland. The vegetation changes dramatically as you enter the heath zone with its giant heathers and wildflowers. On a clear day, you may catch your first exciting views of the snowy peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi.

The trail is steady, and the distance is longer today (6–8 hours). By afternoon you reach Horombo Hut (12,205 ft), where you’ll spend the next two nights. Settle in, enjoy dinner, and rest well.

Day 3: Acclimatization Day – Horombo Hut to Mawenzi Ridge

Today is dedicated to acclimatization, a crucial step for success on the 6-day Marangu Route. After breakfast, you hike up to Mawenzi Ridge (14,400 ft) for stunning close-up views of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The landscape here feels dramatic and motivating.

The hike is relatively short (2–3 hours up), and you return to Horombo Hut in the early afternoon. Use the rest of the day to relax, hydrate, and let your body adjust to the altitude.

Dag 4: Horombo Hut til Kibo Hut

You leave the moorland behind and enter the alpine desert zone. The trail climbs gradually before crossing the wide, lunar-like “Saddle” between Mawenzi and Kibo. The scenery is stark and otherworldly, a vast rocky plain with almost no vegetation.

After 6–8 hours you reach Kibo Hut (15,430 ft), sitting at the base of the Kibo crater wall. Rest early, enjoy a good dinner, and prepare your gear and clothing for the summit attempt. Your guides will give you a full briefing.

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak – Descent to Horombo Hut

Wake around midnight for tea and a light snack. The summit push begins in darkness under a sky full of stars. You climb slowly and steadily – stang stang – as the trail becomes steeper and the air thinner. The cold wind can be biting, but your guides keep you motivated with regular short breaks.

As dawn breaks, you reach Gilman’s Point (18,600 ft) just in time for a magnificent sunrise over Mawenzi Peak. Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft) – the highest point in Africa! Take time to celebrate and absorb the incredible views.

After descending back to Kibo Hut for a short rest, you continue down to Horombo Hut (12,250 ft). A warm meal and deep sleep reward your incredible achievement.

Dag 6: Horombo Hut til Marangu Gate – Retur til Arusha/Moshi

Your final day is a long but mostly downhill trek through the heath zone and back into the lush tropical rainforest. The trail is the same as your ascent, so you can enjoy the scenery one last time, listening to birdsong and spotting monkeys in the trees.

At Marangu Gate you receive your well-deserved summit certificate. Our vehicle will be waiting to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, where a hot shower and celebration meal await.

Congratulations, you have summited Kilimanjaro via the classic Marangu route!
