Addo Elephant National Park is one of South Africa’s most diverse and fascinating wildlife reserves. Established in 1931 to protect the last remaining 11 elephants in the area, the park has grown into a conservation success story. Today, it spans over 1,640 km² (630 sq miles), covering a variety of habitats – from dense Albany thicket and open grasslands to the coastal dunes and the marine environment of the Indian Ocean.
This unique combination of land and sea makes Addo the only national park in the world to protect the Big 7:
Elephant
Lion
Leopard
Buffalo
Rhinoceros (both black and white)
Southern Right Whale
Great White Shark
