Tanzania Hot Air Balloon Safaris

Hot air balloon Safaris in Tanzania are a romantic and evocative way of experiencing the wilderness of East Africa, as you gracefully and silently fly over the plains teeming with herds of wildlife in the early morning.

Typically, Serengeti Hot Air Balloon Safaris begins between 6 am and lasts for around 1-2 hours, during which you will likely see the magnificent wildlife below over several square kilometers of the game park. Balloon safaris are held regularly only in the Serengeti and take off from designated sites (in the Seronera area) where the disturbance to animals is kept to a minimum. Your safari vehicle drops you off at the take-off site and picks you up from your landing site. The safari is followed by a champagne breakfast in the bush, a fitting end to your memorable flight in the wild. Maximum in a balloon

Serengeti Hot Air Balloon Safaris is a fantastic once-in-a-lifetime experience, particularly suitable for a bird’s eye-view game viewing experience on your AfricanMecca wildlife tour in northern Tanzania. Hot air balloon rides leave from three sites in this prime national park. In Central Serengeti, wildlife gathers year-round in the Seronera River Valley where there is permanent water. The Great Migration passes through around May and June.

Serengeti Hot Air Balloon Safaris lets you explore the Western Serengeti includes the Grumeti River, a scene of theatrical crossings during the Great Migration in June and July, when hundreds of thousands of gnu, brave the giant Nile crocodiles, and many perish while others detour to avoid the perilous river. In South Serengeti plains, the wildebeests assemble from December onwards, to calve in February, producing 8000 newborns every day on a three-week marathon, a sight not to be missed on your personalized nature travel in Serengeti.

Discover Serengeti National Park one of the most famous national parks in the world and an important area of biodiversity during a hot air balloon safari over the Serengeti. Marvel at the dawn colors and wildlife during the flight before enjoying a delicious outdoor breakfast.

Your Tanzania balloon safari starts when you are collected from your lodge or special camp for rendezvous at Seronera Lodge at 06 am hours. Soon after 6 in the morning, you board the Land Rovers to be taken to the launch site, a journey of some 40 minutes duration, in time to witness the dawn and the inflation of the balloon. After a final pre-flight safety briefing you board for take off.

The exact direction and duration of the flight depends on the wind and weather conditions of the day but the average flight time is about one hour. Part of the flight will be at an altitude of at least 1,000 feet for magnificent panoramic views of the plains, another part will be at tree-top height for unique views of wildlife.

The balloons are equipped with ‘whisper’ burners to minimize the noise of the burns necessary to navigate the balloon. Periods of ‘burn’ are quite a small proportion of the flight so there are many intervals of complete silence. The flight is smooth and feels windless since the balloon travels at wind speed.

The hot air balloon Safaris experience

Although not cheap, a balloon safari is worth the expense. Floating serenely over the treetops as the sun peaks over the horizon permits you to experience the endless Serengeti plains from an unforgettable perspective. As we set departure very early in the morning, you may even spot some nocturnal predators getting ready for the day.

During most flights the pilot will include sections flown at a higher altitude allowing you to soak up uninterrupted views of the Serengeti; other sections may involve low-level flying, during which there may be the opportunity to see wildlife. Highly experienced pilots can follow rivers and streams and will glide just meters above grunting hippos or wandering giraffes. Flying low allows you to take some great aerial wildlife photos. You move over the plains wherever the wind takes you, while being tracked from the ground by balloon crew in their vehicles.
