Description
Tour Overview
If you’re looking for the most beautiful, remote, and successful way to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the 9-day Northern Circuit Route is widely regarded as one of the very best options on the mountain.
This is the longest route on Kilimanjaro, giving you plenty of time to acclimatize properly. It circles almost the entire mountain clockwise, offering nearly 360-degree panoramic views, including the rarely visited wild northern slopes that few climbers ever see. Because of the extra days and gradual “trek high, sleep low” profile, it boasts one of the highest summit success rates of any route.
The Northern Circuit begins on the western side via the Lemosho trailhead, crosses the beautiful Shira Plateau, then heads north around the mountain, passing remote camps like Moir Hut, Buffalo Camp, and Third Cave, before summiting from the east via School Hut. Descent is via the Mweka Route through lush rainforest.
This itinerary is perfect for fit adventurers who want a true wilderness experience, spectacular scenery, and the best possible chance of standing on Uhuru Peak. With nine full days on the mountain, you move at a comfortable pace, giving your body time to adjust to the altitude while soaking in ever-changing landscapes, from dense rainforest and giant heathers to lunar-like alpine deserts and arctic conditions at the summit.
As an Arusha-based, locally owned tour operator, Kiwoito Africa Safaris specializes in this route. Our experienced Tanzanian guides know every hidden valley, weather shift, and acclimatization trick. We provide high-quality camping gear, nutritious meals prepared fresh each day, and the personal, caring support that makes all the difference on a long trek.
The best months are the drier seasons (January–March and June–October), when skies are clearer and trails are drier. If you want a quieter, more immersive Kilimanjaro experience with maximum success chances, this 9-day Northern Circuit is the route for you.
Day-by-Day Breakdown
Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Your journey begins with a scenic 4-hour drive from Moshi or Arusha to Londorossi Gate. After completing park formalities, you transfer to the Lemosho trailhead and start trekking through pristine, untouched rainforest. Tall trees, twisting vines, and the calls of monkeys and birds surround you as the path winds gently upward.
After 3–4 hours of easy walking, you reach Mti Mkubwa Camp (9,498 ft), your first campsite deep in the forest. Settle into your tent, enjoy a hot meal, and listen to the sounds of the African wilderness on your first night on the mountain.

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp
You leave the dense rainforest behind and enter a beautiful savannah of tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rocks covered in lichen. The trail climbs steadily through rolling hills and crosses several clear streams. As you reach the Shira Ridge, the landscape opens dramatically, and you catch your first stunning glimpse of Kibo Peak across the plateau.
You descend gently to Shira 1 Camp (11,500 ft). This is where the real magic of the Northern Circuit begins.

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
A shorter, gentler day on the high Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus on Earth. You walk east across open moorland meadows dotted with wildflowers and unique giant Senecio trees. The views are wide and peaceful, with Kibo rising majestically in the distance.
You arrive at Shira 2 Camp (12,500 ft) by early afternoon, giving you plenty of time to rest and enjoy the scenery.

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower – Moir Hut
Today you climb east toward the dramatic Lava Tower (15,190 ft), a 300-foot volcanic rock formation standing alone on the plateau. After lunch, you leave the main trail and head to the quiet Moir Hut (13,580 ft) at the base of the Lent Hills. This little-used campsite offers excellent acclimatization opportunities with optional short walks around the hills in the afternoon.

Day 5: Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp
You trek out of Moir Valley with a moderate climb, optionally summiting one of the Lent Hills for extra views before rejoining the main path. As you move north, the landscape opens to reveal vast plains stretching toward the Kenyan border, a truly remote and beautiful section of the mountain.

Day 6: Buffalo Camp to Third Cave

Day 7: Third Cave to School Hut
A steady climb takes you up and over the wide “Saddle” between Kibo and Mawenzi. The lunar-like landscape feels otherworldly. You reach School Hut (15,600 ft) by afternoon. Rest well, eat an early dinner, and prepare your gear; tomorrow is summit day.

Wake around midnight for tea and a light snack. The summit push begins under starry skies. The trail is steep and challenging as you climb slowly in the darkness, pole pole. Around sunrise you reach Gilman’s Point, where the first light explodes over Mawenzi Peak in a spectacular show.
Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft) – the highest point in Africa! Celebrate your achievement with photos and unforgettable views.
