Tour Overview
Climbing Kilimanjaro in 8-day via Lemosho Route is widely regarded as the most scenic trail on Mount Kilimanjaro. Starting from the remote western side, it offers panoramic views from almost every angle and a wonderful sense of wilderness and solitude, especially in the early days.
As one of the newer and longer routes, Lemosho gives you plenty of time to acclimatize properly, which is why it enjoys one of the highest summit success rates. The route crosses the vast and beautiful Shira Plateau, follows the dramatic Southern Circuit beneath the Southern Ice Field, and summits from Barafu before descending via the Mweka Route through lush rainforest.
At Kiwoito Africa Safaris, the Lemosho Route is our absolute favorite and the one we recommend most often. We guide more clients on Lemosho than any other route, and the feedback is consistently outstanding – travelers love the balance of low crowds, breathtaking scenery, comfortable pacing, and excellent acclimatization. Many say it’s the perfect combination of adventure and beauty.
The journey begins with a long but scenic drive from Moshi or Arusha to Londorossi Gate. You then spend the first two days climbing through pristine rainforest before emerging onto the high Shira plateau. From there the path is relatively gentle until it joins the Machame Route near Lava Tower. The Southern Circuit offers spectacular close-up views of the ice fields and glaciers before the final summit push.
This 8-day version includes extra time for acclimatization, making it ideal for most climbers who want a rewarding yet manageable experience. As an Arusha-based, locally owned operator, our experienced Tanzanian guides know the Lemosho Route intimately. They understand the best pacing, the weather patterns, and how to keep you motivated and safe every step of the way.
We provide high-quality camping gear, fresh nutritious meals, and the warm, personal service that turns a great climb into an unforgettable journey. If you’re looking for the most scenic and enjoyable way to reach the roof of Africa, the 8-day Lemosho Route with Kiwoito Africa Safaris is the perfect choice.
Day-by-Day Breakdown
Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Your Lemosho adventure starts with a scenic 4-hour drive from Moshi or Arusha to Londorossi Gate for park formalities. You then transfer to the Lemosho trailhead and begin trekking through undisturbed, pristine rainforest. Tall trees, moss-covered branches, and the sounds of birds and monkeys accompany you as the path winds gently upward.
After 3–4 hours of easy walking, you reach Mti Mkubwa Camp (9,498 ft), your first campsite deep in the forest. Settle into your tent and enjoy your first mountain dinner under the trees.

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp
You leave the dense rainforest behind and enter a beautiful savannah of tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rocks draped in lichen. The trail climbs steadily through lush rolling hills and crosses several clear streams. As you reach the Shira Ridge, the landscape opens dramatically, and you catch your first stunning glimpse of Kibo Peak across the plateau.
You descend gently to Shira 1 Camp (11,500 ft). This is where the real beauty of Lemosho begins to unfold.

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Moir Hut
Today you explore the high Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus on Earth. It’s a pleasant, relatively flat walk east across open moorland meadows dotted with wildflowers and giant Senecio trees. Later in the day, you divert from the main trail to the quiet Moir Hut (13,800 ft) at the base of the Lent Hills. This secluded spot offers excellent acclimatization opportunities with optional short walks in the afternoon.
Accommodation: Camping at Moir Hut
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 4: Moir Hut to Lava Tower – Barranco Camp
You climb a ridge and head southeast toward the impressive Lava Tower (15,190 ft), a 300-foot volcanic rock formation standing dramatically on the plateau. After lunch, you descend through the strange and beautiful Senecio Forest into the Barranco Valley.
Even though you start and end the day at roughly the same elevation, the time spent higher up is excellent for acclimatization. You arrive at Barranco Camp (13,044 ft), dramatically situated beneath the towering Barranco Wall.
Accommodation: Camping at Barranco Camp
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
After breakfast, you tackle the famous Great Barranco Wall – a steep but non-technical climb of nearly 900 feet with fantastic views from the top. You then cross a series of rolling hills and valleys before dropping into Karanga Valley and climbing up to Karanga Camp (13,106 ft). This shorter day is designed to help your body adjust before the final ascent.
Accommodation: Camping at Karanga Camp
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
A steady climb takes you to the junction with the Mweka Trail and onward to the rocky Barafu Camp (15,331 ft). From here you have completed the Southern Circuit and enjoy sweeping views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, as well as the Southern Ice Field.
Rest in the afternoon, eat an early dinner, and prepare your gear. Your guides will give you a full summit-day briefing.
Accommodation: Camping at Barafu Camp
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak – Descent to Mweka Camp
Wake around midnight for tea and a light snack. The summit push begins under starry skies. Climb slowly and steadily (pole pole) as the trail becomes steeper and the air thinner.
Around sunrise you reach Stella Point (18,900 ft), where the first light creates a magical glow over Mawenzi Peak. Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft) – the highest point in Africa! Celebrate your achievement with photos and unforgettable views.
After descending to Barafu for lunch, you continue down the rocky trail to Mweka Camp (10,065 ft) in the upper forest. A well-earned dinner and deep sleep await.
Accommodation: Camping at Mweka Camp
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Return to Arusha/Moshi
Your final morning is a pleasant downhill trek through lush rainforest. The trail can be wet and muddy, but the birdsong and green canopy make it enjoyable. At Mweka Gate you receive your hard-earned summit certificates.
Our vehicle will meet you in Mweka Village and drive you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, where a hot shower and celebration meal await.
Congratulations – you have summited Kilimanjaro via its most scenic route!
