Tour overview

Wildlife safaris in Tanzaniaโ€™s northern circuit are a bucket-list experience everyone should have at least once, the thrill of spotting lions at dawn, the vast endless plains, and the raw beauty of Africa up close. This 5-day Tanzania lodge group joining safari is perfect for budget-conscious travelers, families, friends, or anyone wanting to share the adventure in a small group setting.

Starting from Arusha, youโ€™ll explore Tarangireโ€™s baobab- dotted landscapes and elephant herds, Lake Manyaraโ€™s lush forests and tree-climbing lions, the iconic Serengeti with its Great Migration (seasonal), and the breathtaking Ngorongoro Crater, often called the worldโ€™s largest natural wonder. Along the way, you may enjoy a cultural stop at a Maasai village in the Ngorongoro Highlands for an authentic glimpse into local life.

Accommodations are comfortable mid-range lodges and tented camps with en-suite facilities, hot showers, and great views, nothing too basic, but great value. As an Arusha-based operator, our local guides know the best routes, animal movements, and hidden spots to make your group experience personal and memorable. This itinerary runs year-round, with dry seasons (Juneโ€“October) ideal for migration sightings and easier game viewing.

Day-by-day breakdown

Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park (approx. 2.5-hour drive)

Your adventure starts with a pickup from your Arusha hotel or airport. We head straight to Tarangire National Park, one of northern Tanzaniaโ€™s hidden gems. As you enter, the landscape transforms: towering ancient baobab trees stretch toward the sky, and massive herds of elephants roam freely (Tarangire has one of the highest elephant densities in Africa).

Game drives take you along the Tarangire River, the only reliable water source in the dry season, attracting zebras, wildebeest, buffalos, giraffes, impalas, and predators like lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas. Bird lovers rejoice; there are over 550 species, from colorful hornbills to flocks of ostriches. The parkโ€™s termite mounds and rolling hills add to the dramatic scenery. After a full day of sightings, we drive to your lodge for a hearty dinner and a restful night under the stars.

Accommodation: Nsya Lodge (mid-range, comfortable rooms with en-suite facilities)

Meal Plan: Full Board (Lunch, Dinner)

Day 2: Tarangire to Lake Manyara National Park (approx. 30-minute drive)

After breakfast, a short drive brings you to Lake Manyara National Park, nestled against the dramatic western wall of the Great Rift Valley. This compact park stays lush year-round thanks to its groundwater forest, perfect for spotting olive baboons, herds of elephants, buffalos, zebras, giraffes, hippos wallowing in the shallows, and the famous tree-climbing lions resting in acacia branches.

Flamingo flocks often tint the alkaline lake pink, and over 450 bird species make it a paradise for birdwatchers. Your guide will point out the highlights during relaxed game drives along the lake shores. Return to the lodge in the late afternoon for downtime, dinner, and stories around the fire.

Accommodation: Nsya Lodge

Meal Plan: Full Board (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 3: Lake Manyara to Serengeti National Park (approx. 5-hour drive)

Pick up your picnic lunch after breakfast, then set off through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area toward the Serengeti. The drive itself is scenic, with Maasai villages, rolling highlands, and chances for wildlife along the way. Enter the Serengeti, where the name comes from the Maasai word “Siringeti,” meaning โ€œendless plains.โ€

The vast grasslands stretch forever, teeming with wildebeest, zebras (especially during migration season), and predators. This is one of Africaโ€™s top parks for spotting the Big Five, plus cheetahs, hyenas, and countless birds of prey. Afternoon game drives immerse you in the action before checking into your tented camp for dinner under the vast African sky.

Accommodation: Serengeti Heritage Tented Camp (mid-range luxury tents with en-suite facilities)

Meal Plan: Full Board

Day 4: Full Day in Serengeti + Transfer to Ngorongoro Conservation Area (approx. 3-hour drive)

Rise early for coffee/tea and an unforgettable morning game drive, prime time for predators on the move and herds grazing in golden light. Return to camp for brunch, pack up, and then continue game viewing in the Serengeti until noon.

Drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a shared space where Maasai pastoralists live alongside wildlife. You’ll spend the night on the crater rim with stunning views. This multi-use area connects to the Serengeti ecosystem, and seasonal calving grounds (Decโ€“Apr in Ndutu) add extra magic if timed right. Relax at the lodge, enjoy dinner, and share the dayโ€™s highlights.

Accommodation: Rhino Lodge (mid-range, cozy rooms with crater views)

Meal Plan: Full Board

Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater Tour + Return to Arusha (approx. 2.5-hour drive)

Early descent into the Ngorongoro Crater, the worldโ€™s largest intact caldera, feels like entering a lost world. Formed from a collapsed volcano, itโ€™s packed with wildlife: black rhinos, lions, elephants, buffalos, hyenas, and countless antelopes, all in a lush, enclosed setting. Game drives on the crater floor offer some of the best close-up sightings in Africa.

After a half-day of exploration (and perhaps a picnic), ascend and drive back to Arusha, arriving in time for your departure or onward plans. Youโ€™ll leave with memories of incredible wildlife, shared laughs with your group, and the spirit of Tanzania.
