Tour Overview
Looking for an action-packed yet affordable Tanzania safari? Our 5 days budget camping safari in Tanzania takes you to four incredible destinations: Tarangire National Park, the endless plains of the Serengeti, the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater, and the spectacular Lake Natron, home to thousands of flamingos.
This private safari offers excellent chances to see the Big Five and, depending on the season, witness the Great Wildebeest Migration in the Serengeti. You’ll also have the unique opportunity to trek the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai (optional night climb) and enjoy a peaceful sunset walk along the shores of Lake Natron.
As an Arusha-based local tour operator, Kiwoito Africa Safaris specializes in budget camping safaris that are comfortable, private, and full of adventure. You travel with your own experienced Tanzanian driver-guide and a professional safari chef who prepares fresh meals daily. We provide all camping gear (tents, mattresses, pillows, chairs, and tables). You are welcome to bring your own sleeping bag or rent one affordably in Arusha.
This itinerary is ideal for adventurous travelers, families, or small groups who want to experience real wilderness while keeping costs reasonable. The safari can easily be combined with a Kilimanjaro climb or a relaxing Zanzibar beach extension to create the ultimate Africa adventure.
Day-by-Day Breakdown
Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park
After breakfast, we meet you in Arusha, do any last-minute shopping if needed, and drive to Tarangire National Park (about 2–3 hours).
This beautiful park is famous for its massive elephant herds and thousands of ancient baobab trees. You will enjoy a full day of game drives, spotting lions, leopards, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, and many bird species, including rare ones like the ashy starling and fringe-eared oryx.
We enjoy a packed lunch inside the park before heading to our campsite near Lake Manyara in the late afternoon.
Accommodation: Lilac Public Campsite (or similar) near Lake Manyara
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 2: Tarangire Area to Ngorongoro Crater
After breakfast, we drive a short distance to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and descend 600 meters into the crater floor for a full day of game viewing.
The Ngorongoro Crater is a natural paradise with permanent water and grass that supports huge herds of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, and Thomson’s gazelle. It is one of the best places in Africa to see black rhinos in the wild. Predators are plentiful, lions, cheetahs, hyenas, jackals, and elusive leopards.
We visit Lake Magadi, where hippos wallow and flamingos often gather in large numbers. In the late afternoon, we drive up to the crater rim for beautiful sunset views.
Accommodation: Simba Public Campsite on the Ngorongoro Crater rim
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 3: Ngorongoro to Serengeti National Park
We leave the crater rim after breakfast and drive down to the famous Serengeti National Park, “the place where the land runs on forever.”
We head to the Seronera area in central Serengeti, a wildlife-rich zone with the Seronera River that attracts large numbers of animals. This is a fantastic place to witness predator action: lions hunting, cheetahs chasing, or hyenas scavenging.
Enjoy a bush picnic lunch near rocky kopjes, followed by an afternoon and sunset game drive. If your timing is right, you may see the Great Wildebeest Migration herds thundering across the plains.
Accommodation: Seronera Public Campsite, Central Serengeti
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 4: Serengeti to Lake Natron
Today starts early with a sunrise game drive in the Serengeti, a magical time to spot big cats returning from the night hunt or lionesses preparing for a morning ambush.
We then exit the park at Klein’s Gate and continue north toward Lake Natron. This remote and dramatic landscape is famous for its alkaline lake that turns pink with thousands of flamingos.
We arrive in the late afternoon for a relaxing sunset walk along the lakeshore. After an early dinner, you can rest before the optional night climb of the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai (weather and seismic conditions permitting).
Accommodation: Lake Natron Campsite
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 5: Lake Natron to Arusha
Very early this morning (around midnight), those who choose to climb will attempt the summit of Ol Doinyo Lengai, the “Mountain of God” to the Maasai. Reaching the crater at dawn offers spectacular views over the Rift Valley.
After descending, you can enjoy an optional short waterfall hike and swim (time permitting). We then drive back to Arusha, arriving in the late afternoon. We can drop you at the airport or your hotel. If you need accommodation in Arusha on the last night, we are happy to arrange excellent options to suit your budget.
Accommodation: Not included (hotel in Arusha available on request)
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch
