Day 1: Kilimanjaro Airport – Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa

You are picked up in Moshi or Arusha and meet your mountain crew before driving to Londorossi Gate for registration. The trek begins along the Lemosho Route, starting in the Afromontane rainforest, the first of four ecological zones on the mountain. You hike through dense forest, gradually gaining altitude from 7,742 ft to 9,498 ft over about 4 miles, which takes approximately 3 to 4 hours.

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa to Moir Hut Camp

Altitude: 9,498 to 11,500 feet.

Distance: 8 km/ 5 miles

Hiking time: 5-6 hours

From the forested slopes of Lemosho Route, you ascend through podocarpus and juniper forest before emerging into a landscape of heather and lichen-covered volcanic rock. The trail opens onto the wide Shira Plateau, offering expansive views and a sense of altitude gain. This section climbs from 9,498 ft to 11,500 ft over about 5 miles and takes approximately 5 to 6 hours.

Day 3: Moir hut camp to Barranco Camp

Altitude: 3850m/12,600ft to 4000m/13,000ft

Distance: 8 km/5 miles

From Moir hut camp, you cross the slopes of Kibo. This section is harsh, with wide temperature swings and thin air. Few plants or animals survive here. The trail leads to the volcanic formation called Lava Tower, where you stop for lunch at 15,223 ft. Afterward, you descend to 13,044 ft. The total distance is about 7 km and the hike takes 4 to 6 hours.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Elevation: 4000m/13,000ft to 4050m/13,250ft

Distance to climb: 5km/3miles

You have a shorter trekking day as you head toward Karanga Camp after climbing the steep Barranco Wall. This section requires focus and balance, with sections where you use both hands and feet to reach the top. Once over the wall, the trail eases as you cross into the Karanga Valley and continue to camp. The route covers about 3 miles, gaining a small elevation from 13,044 ft to 13,123 ft, and takes around 4 to 5 hours.

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Elevation: 4050m/13,250ft to 4700m/15,350ft

Distance to go: 4 km/2 miles

Climbing time: 3-4 hours

Habitat: Alpine desert

Today is a shorter ascent as you make your way to Barafu Camp, the base for your summit attempt. You climb steadily through a barren, high-altitude landscape, reaching camp in time for an early lunch. The rest of the day is set aside for rest and preparation before the night summit push. The route involves an ascent of about 3 miles, followed later by a descent of around 7 miles, with elevation ranging from 15,288 ft up to 19,341 ft and down to 12,467 ft. The ascent takes about 7 to 8 hours, while the descent takes 4 to 6 hours.

Day 6: Barafu Camp - Uhuru peak - Mweka Camp

Elevation: 4700m/15,350ft to 5895m/19,340ft

Habitat: Rocky scree and ice-covered summit

You depart just before midnight for the final push to the summit, climbing steadily through the dark in cold, thin air. As you reach the top, you are rewarded with a stunning sunrise rising over Mawenzi Peak. After taking in the views, you begin your descent, dropping from 12,467 ft to 5,380 ft over about 6 miles. The descent takes around 3 to 4 hours.

After breakfast, you continue your descent through the lush montane forest, enjoying the final stretch of the mountain. Around midday, you reach the gate, say farewell to your crew, and transfer back to Moshi or Arusha for your onward departure. The trek takes about 4 to 7 hours.
