Makoa Farm is located in Northern Tanzania, south of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa.

The farm is near Kilimanjaro’s Machame Gate with access to the spectacular rainforest on the mountain’s lower slopes. The area is home to the Chagga, people whose small villages and coffee farms dot the hillsides. On the plains to the south, Masai graze their cattle. The area is rich in diversity.

The Makoa and Kikafu river valleys surround the farmland with their beautiful gallery forest, picturesque villages, and local markets that can be visited in the surrounding area – usually accompanied by the fantastic view of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Enjoy a stay in cozy guesthouses and the ambiance of an estate founded in 1901 with the original colonial-style farmhouse on a former coffee plantation.
The farm and its surroundings are also ideal for short hikes, bird watching, animal and nature exploring e.g. along the river valleys.
Whilst staying on Makoa-Farm you will enjoy comfortable accommodation and excellent, always freshly prepared food.

You don’t need to travel to Uganda or Rwanda to have a close encounter of the primate kind!

Makoa Farm Tour in the Kilimanjaro foothills is a primate rehabilitation center where visitors can interact with a wide variety of animals such as primates, birds, and more!

MAKOA NATURE WALK

3-4 hour program across the farm, bushland, forest, and river valley, leading to hidden spots at Makoa and Kikafu rivers. Your guide will explain to you the medical use of many of the plants on the way. There is a beautiful pond to swim by the river and you will be rewarded by a natural massage from the waterfall. Expect to see primates and birds during your walk, and occasionally a secret little antelope in the bush.

enjoy being accompanied by the former „companion animals“ (in the past in charge of the elephant calves and zebra foals), namely Suzie and Lieve (the black-headed sheep) and Pina and Fridolin (the donkeys), on the walk – and they love your attention and cuddles!

VISIT WITH OR WITHOUT HIKING TO THE HOT SPRINGS

depart by four-wheel drive to the hot springs (‘Hot Springs’) south of Makoa Farm in the Masaai Steppe. Discover the surroundings on a guided walk through a biotope between various springs and rivers. Along the way, we observe exotic birds, monkeys, and, with a bit of luck, the shy crocodiles. It is also the habitat of various – but very shy – gazelles, striped mongooses, and nocturnal inhabitants such as porcupines, aardvarks, and striped hyenas.

After picnicking under huge, ancient fig trees, there is plenty of time to relax and bathe in the warm spring during the Makoa Farm Tour!
