Tanzania is one of the few countries in the world where you can spend the morning watching lions on a vast plain and the same evening on a coral island with a cocktail in your hand and the Indian Ocean in front of you. The combined Tanzania safari and Zanzibar holiday works because the contrast between the two halves makes both more memorable. After five or six days of dust, early morning game drives, and tented camps, the Zanzibar beach feels twice as restful. After a few days of swimming and snorkelling, you appreciate the safari memories with proper distance.
This is the trip we plan most often. We are Kiwoito Africa Safaris, based in Arusha. We have been organising Tanzania safari and Zanzibar combinations for honeymoon couples, families, multigenerational groups, photographers, and first time safari travellers for years. This page is what we walk our clients through when they email us asking how to combine the safari and the beach without the trip feeling rushed, exhausting, or generic.
We will not promise you a fairytale. We will tell you how long the trip actually needs to be, which lodges genuinely deliver, when the wildlife and weather align with the right Zanzibar conditions, and where the trip usually goes wrong when travellers plan it themselves online. By the end of this page you should have a clear sense of which length and structure suits you, and you can click through to the specific itinerary that matches.
How Long the Combined Trip Actually Needs
Most travellers who email us asking for a quote start by suggesting seven days. We almost always recommend longer.
Seven days is enough to see the safari side properly or the beach side properly, but not both. Travellers who try to compress the safari into three nights end up tired, missing the calving in Ndutu or the Mara crossings depending on the season, and then feel rushed in Zanzibar. The combinations that genuinely work are:
- Six days if the safari is the main event and Zanzibar is a final two night decompression. We have a 6 day Tanzania safari and Zanzibar package for travellers on tight schedules.
- Seven days as the working compromise when time is genuinely limited. See our 7 day Tanzania safari and Zanzibar package for the structure we recommend.
- Nine to ten days as the popular honeymoon length. Our 9 day Tanzania honeymoon safari and Zanzibar is one of the most booked combinations on the site.
- Twelve days for travellers who want to see more parks without rushing. See our 12 day luxury Tanzania safari and Zanzibar for the high end version.
- Fourteen days for the version that includes more parks, a slow week in Zanzibar, and proper rest at both ends. The 14 day Tanzania safari and Zanzibar beach page covers this length.
- Sixteen to seventeen days for the most ambitious trips that add Lake Eyasi cultural visits, Arusha National Park, or a Kilimanjaro recovery day. See the 16 day and 17 day versions.
Anything under six days and you are paying for a trip you will not fully enjoy. We will tell you that during planning rather than just selling you what you asked for.
What “Tanzania Safari” Actually Means in This Combination
The safari side of the trip almost always happens on the northern circuit, which is the cluster of national parks accessible from Arusha. The southern and western circuits exist and are worth visiting, but the northern circuit is what works for combination trips because the wildlife density is high, the lodges are excellent, the distances are manageable, and the connection to Zanzibar is straightforward via flight from a Serengeti airstrip.
The four parks that make up most safari plus Zanzibar trips are:
Serengeti National Park is the flagship. It is the site of the Great Wildebeest Migration, the largest park in Tanzania at roughly 14,750 square kilometres, and where most travellers focus the bulk of their safari days. The region you stay in within the Serengeti depends on the season. From January to early March, the calving in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu draws the herds. From August to October, the Mara River crossings happen in the northern Serengeti. April and May are the long rains and best avoided. November to December the herds return south. Our guides position your trip for the appropriate region based on your dates.
Ngorongoro Crater is the 260 square kilometre volcanic caldera that delivers four or five of the Big Five in a single day for most travellers. It is one of the most reliable game viewing experiences in Africa.
Tarangire National Park has one of the largest elephant populations in East Africa, baobab trees, and noticeably thinner crowds than the Serengeti. From June to October, when the Tarangire River is the main water source, wildlife concentration is extraordinary.
Lake Manyara National Park is smaller and usually included as a single night stop. Famous for tree climbing lions and flamingos.
Different itinerary lengths cover different combinations of these parks. Six and seven day trips typically cover Tarangire, Ngorongoro, and Serengeti. Longer trips add Lake Manyara, Lake Eyasi for the Hadzabe cultural visit, and sometimes Arusha National Park.
What “Zanzibar Holiday” Actually Means in This Combination
Zanzibar is not one place. It is an archipelago, and the choice of which beach to stay on matters more than most first time visitors realise. We cover this in detail on our Zanzibar beach holiday page, but here is the short version.
The north coast around Nungwi and Kendwa is busier and more developed. The tide stays in for most of the day, which means swimming windows are longer. More restaurants, more nightlife if that matters, and more all inclusive resort options.
The northeast coast around Matemwe and Pwani Mchangani is quieter, with smaller resorts, exceptional snorkelling on Mnemba Atoll just offshore, and a more peaceful pace. The tide retreats far out twice a day, which limits some swimming windows.
The east coast around Paje, Jambiani, and Bwejuu has white sand and turquoise water with kite surfing, a more boutique style, and a more local feel.
For most safari plus Zanzibar trips, we recommend either Nungwi (for travellers who want all day swimming and social atmosphere) or Matemwe (for travellers who want quieter beaches and the best snorkelling). We discuss the right coast for your trip during planning.
A typical Zanzibar segment includes some combination of:
- Beach time and pool relaxation
- Stone Town walking tour with a local guide who knows the carved doors, the slave market memorial, the Forodhani Gardens night food market, and the Old Fort
- Spice farm tour, ideally with Swahili lunch on the farm
- Mnemba Atoll snorkelling by traditional dhow or motorboat
- Prison Island visit with the giant Aldabra tortoises (some over 150 years old)
- Jozani Forest visit with the endemic Zanzibar red colobus monkeys
- Sunset dhow cruise
- Spa treatments and private dining for honeymoon couples
Different itinerary lengths fit in different combinations of these. Shorter Zanzibar segments focus on beach time with one or two excursions. Longer Zanzibar segments do the full set without rushing.
Our Most Booked Combined Itineraries
Here is how we structure the most popular combined trips. Click through to any of these for the full day by day itinerary.
6 Day Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar
The shortest combination we recommend. Three days in Tarangire and the Serengeti, then a fly out to Zanzibar for two nights with a Stone Town tour and beach time. Best for travellers genuinely tight on time. Full details on our 6 day Tanzania safari and Zanzibar page.
7 Day Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar
The popular short option. Three days on the northern circuit (Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Serengeti) followed by three nights on Zanzibar with selected excursions. Full details on our 7 day Tanzania safari and Zanzibar page.
9 Day Tanzania Honeymoon Safari and Zanzibar
Built specifically for honeymoon couples. Four days on safari with a private vehicle and fluent guide, then five days on Zanzibar at a beachfront honeymoon suite with private bush dinner, sundowner setups, and optional spa treatments. Full details on our 9 day Tanzania honeymoon safari and Zanzibar page. We have a broader honeymoon overview for couples deciding between honeymoon trip lengths.
12 Day Luxury Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar
For travellers who want top tier lodges, premium guides, and extra time at each park. The luxury version of the combined trip. Full details on our 12 day luxury Tanzania safari and Zanzibar page, and our broader Tanzania luxury safari overview covers the lodge tier in more detail.
14 Day Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar Beach
The most balanced of the longer combinations. Seven days of safari covering Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Serengeti, and Lake Manyara, then a full week in Zanzibar with all the major excursions woven in. Full details on our 14 day Tanzania safari and Zanzibar beach page.
16 to 17 Day Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar
The most ambitious combinations we run. Includes Lake Eyasi for the Hadzabe cultural visit, Arusha National Park, and selected luxury elements. See the 16 day and 17 day versions.
Custom Length Combinations
These are starting points. Every trip we run is built around the specific traveller, dates, group composition, and goals. If none of the above matches your timing or interests, request a custom quote and we will build you something that does.
When to Come
The best window for a combined Tanzania safari and Zanzibar holiday depends on what matters most to you.
January and February. The calving season in Ndutu, dry warm weather in Zanzibar. One of the best combined windows of the year for both halves.
June to October. Dry season everywhere on the mainland. The Mara River crossings happen from August to early October. Zanzibar is dry, breezy, and busy with European summer travellers. This is the most booked window for the combined trip and we recommend booking eight to twelve months ahead.
March to May. The long rains. We do not actively recommend this window for combined trips because some lodges close, roads turn to mud on safari, and Zanzibar gets hammered with rain especially in April. If your dates are flexible, choose another window.
November. Short rains begin. Quieter parks, lower prices, occasional afternoon storms in Zanzibar. Reasonable for travellers on a budget who do not need peak conditions.
December. Short rains tail off and the holiday season starts. Prices in Zanzibar are at their highest but the weather usually cooperates. Good for Christmas and New Year combination trips if you book early.
What These Trips Actually Cost
We will not put a single number on this because the cost depends entirely on the trip length, the lodges chosen, the season, and the level of privacy. But for a frame of reference, ten day combined trips in 2026 typically fall into these tiers:
- Mid range (good lodges and resorts, comfortable but not boutique): the entry point for a real combined trip, usually starting around USD 4,000 to 5,000 per person.
- Luxury (boutique tented camps, premium guides, beachfront suites in Zanzibar): roughly two to two and a half times mid range. This is the tier most international travellers pick.
- Ultra luxury (top tier camps in private concessions, in suite dining, exclusive game drives, top tier Zanzibar suites): roughly four to six times mid range. Private plunge pools, in suite dining, and exclusive vehicle assignments become standard at this tier.
Park fees and conservation fees in Tanzania are denominated in USD and add roughly USD 80 to 100 per person per day on safari. In Zanzibar, there are infrastructure and visitor taxes that add about USD 15 to 20 per person per night at most lodges. The domestic flight from a Serengeti airstrip to Zanzibar typically costs USD 300 to 500 per person depending on the route. We always quote these separately so you can see the breakdown.
How the Connection Between Safari and Zanzibar Actually Works
One of the things that makes the combined trip feel seamless when planned well is the transfer from the Serengeti to Zanzibar. The standard structure looks like this:
You finish your last morning game drive in the Serengeti and have lunch at the lodge. The vehicle takes you to the nearest Serengeti airstrip (Seronera, Kogatende, or one of the smaller airstrips depending on your itinerary). You board a domestic flight, which is typically a small Cessna Caravan or similar light aircraft, and fly via Arusha to Zanzibar. The total flight time is around three and a half hours including the Arusha refuelling stop, although this varies.
You land at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar in the late afternoon, and a Zanzibar driver meets you outside arrivals with a Kiwoito sign. The transfer to your beach resort takes between forty minutes and an hour and a half depending on the coast you have chosen. You arrive at the resort in time for sunset, dinner, and your first night on the island.
Light aircraft luggage limits are typically 15 kg per person packed in a soft duffel bag (no hard suitcases). We send detailed packing guidance once your trip is booked.
What Most Travellers Get Wrong When Planning Themselves
We see the same handful of mistakes when travellers have tried to plan a Tanzania safari and Zanzibar trip online before reaching out to us.
Compressing the safari to fit a beach holiday they had already booked. Three nights in the Serengeti is not enough. You will spend most of your time in transit and miss the slow game viewing that makes a safari feel different from a one off zoo visit.
Picking the wrong region of the Serengeti for the season. Booking a northern Serengeti lodge in February when the herds are in Ndutu, or a southern Serengeti lodge in September when the herds are at the Mara River. The Serengeti is the size of Northern Ireland. Region matters more than the park name.
Picking the wrong coast of Zanzibar. Booking a northeast coast lodge expecting all day swimming, then realising the tide goes out for hours. Or booking Nungwi expecting privacy and finding it surprisingly busy.
Underestimating the connection day. The day you fly from the Serengeti to Zanzibar is largely a travel day. You can either do a half day game drive that morning or arrive in Zanzibar earlier and have time at the resort. We discuss this with each client based on which they prefer.
Cheap quotes that look almost too good. If a quoted itinerary feels suspiciously cheap, ask which exact lodges, ask if park fees and Zanzibar taxes are included, and ask about vehicle type. Travellers who chase the cheapest quote often end up sharing a vehicle with strangers, staying at lodges thirty minutes from the actual game viewing area, and missing the connection details that make the trip feel seamless.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should a Tanzania safari and Zanzibar holiday be?
Ten days is our most recommended length. Six is the minimum we suggest if you want to do both halves justice. Twelve to fourteen is better if you can spare the time. Anything shorter than six days and you are paying for a trip you will not fully enjoy.
Is the Tanzania safari and Zanzibar combination worth it, or should I just do one?
We get this question often, and the honest answer is that the combination is genuinely worth it for most travellers because the contrast between the two halves makes both more memorable. If you already know one half of the trip is your real interest (only safari, only beach), focusing entirely on that side is a fair choice. If you are unsure, the combination almost always wins.
Can I do the trip in reverse, Zanzibar first then safari?
Yes, technically. We do not usually recommend it because the safari is more demanding (early mornings, long drives) and works better when you are fresh. The Zanzibar beach is more restful and works better as the wind down. Trips can be structured either way but the safari first version is the one we recommend for most travellers.
Is Tanzania safe for a safari and Zanzibar trip?
Yes. Tanzania is one of the most politically stable countries in East Africa, the safari areas have ranger presence and clear safety protocols, and Zanzibar is a major established tourist destination. Standard travel sense applies in Stone Town at night.
Do we need vaccinations?
Yellow fever is required if you are arriving from a country with yellow fever risk. Routine vaccinations should be up to date. Anti malarial medication is recommended for both the safari and Zanzibar parts of the trip. Speak to a travel doctor at least six weeks before departure.
What are the visa requirements?
Most nationalities can get a Tanzania eVisa online before travel or a Visa on Arrival. The Tanzania visa covers Zanzibar (which is part of the United Republic of Tanzania). Your passport must be valid for at least six months from your travel date.
How far in advance should I book?
For peak season combined trips (August, September, December, February), we recommend booking eight to twelve months ahead, particularly if you want top tier lodges and resorts. For shoulder season, four to six months is usually enough. For last minute trips we sometimes have availability and can put together itineraries on shorter notice, but lodge choice will be more limited.
What about kosher, halal, or other dietary needs?
We routinely accommodate dietary requirements including kosher safaris, halal, vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, and others. Tell us at planning stage and we will build the trip accordingly.
Can you arrange the trip with a specific language guide?
Yes. We have fluent guides in French, German, Italian, Mandarin Chinese, and Japanese. Tell us your language preference at planning stage.
Can the combined trip be wheelchair accessible?
Yes. We run wheelchair accessible Tanzania safaris and wheelchair accessible Zanzibar tours and we combine these into integrated trips for travellers with mobility needs. Tell us your mobility profile at planning stage.
Can we add Kilimanjaro to the safari and Zanzibar trip?
Yes. The combination of Kilimanjaro climb plus safari plus Zanzibar is one of the most ambitious trips we run. Total duration is typically 18 to 22 days. We recommend climbing first, then a short safari for recovery and game viewing, then Zanzibar to fully decompress.
What is the best mode of transport between safari and Zanzibar?
Domestic flight from a Serengeti airstrip via Arusha to Zanzibar. The flight is around three and a half hours total including the refuelling stop in Arusha and is typically operated on light aircraft (Cessna Caravan or similar). Driving from the Serengeti to the coast is technically possible but takes two to three days and is not part of any sensible itinerary.
What should we pack?
Safari packing is neutral colours, layers for cool mornings and warm afternoons, closed shoes for game drives, and a soft duffel rather than a hard suitcase (light aircraft luggage limits are 15 kg per person). Zanzibar packing is beachwear, but Stone Town is a Muslim city so cover shoulders and knees in the historic centre. We send a detailed packing list once your trip is booked.
Is Zanzibar all inclusive or are meals separate?
Most safari lodges in Tanzania are full board, meaning all meals are included. Zanzibar is mixed. Some resorts are all inclusive, some are bed and breakfast, some are half board. We will clarify which model applies to each lodge in your quote so you can budget for meals.
Can children come on a combined trip?
Yes. We arrange family safaris regularly and Zanzibar is family friendly. Most resorts welcome children, and the Jozani forest, Prison Island tortoises, and beach time work especially well for younger travellers. Some safari camps have minimum ages (typically 6 to 12) so we factor that into lodge selection for families.
Do you have direct flights from my home country?
Direct flights to Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) are operated by KLM, Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Qatar Airways, Emirates, and seasonally by other carriers. Zanzibar (ZNZ) has direct flights from a few European cities including seasonal charters from Italy and the UK. We can advise on routing but we do not directly issue international tickets.
Why Travel With Kiwoito Africa Safaris
We are based in Arusha, the gateway to Tanzania’s northern circuit and a 90 minute drive from Kilimanjaro Airport. Our guides are East African, most have been guiding for over a decade, and we have direct operator partnerships and operational presence on Zanzibar to deliver the beach side of your trip with the same care as the safari side.
We currently hold a 5.0 average rating on TripAdvisor across more than 200 reviews and 4.9 on Google across more than 100 reviews. A meaningful share of these reviews come from travellers who specifically chose Kiwoito for the combined safari and Zanzibar experience. Read the reviews directly.
We are members of the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO) and licensed by the Tanzania Tourist Board. Our certifications are listed publicly.
We do not own lodges. That means our recommendations are based on what genuinely suits you, not on which property pays a kickback. We will tell you honestly which lodges and resorts make sense for your dates and budget, and where the trade offs are.
We also keep our group sizes small. Most of our combined safari and Zanzibar trips are fully private: just you, your guide, and a custom 4×4 with charging ports, cold drinks, and a pop up roof on the safari side. No 14 person minibuses, no shared vehicles, no awkward dinners with other groups.
If you are starting to plan a Tanzania safari and Zanzibar holiday, the best next step is to send us your rough dates and group size. We will come back to you with two or three honest options, no pressure, and a clear price breakdown including park fees, lodge rates, vehicle, guide, internal flights, and Zanzibar taxes.
